Presented below are some reference photos of a screen worn TOS red female duty uniform - one of the iconic creations of Star Trek Original Series Costume Designer William Ware Theiss. This beautiful engineering dress was constructed of a velour fabric for the 1st or 2nd season of the series and features a front hidden zipper traversing the left side of the costume along the major seam line that bisects the gold starfleet insignia patch. The TOS female duty uniforms were the most elaborately constructed of all of the Starfleet costumes developed for the show.

The large black collar affixed to the top of the costume exhibits identical construction details to those seen in a 2nd season Sciences dress which was featured in an earlier photostudy on this site. Star Trek: The Original Series Blue Medical Jumpsuit from "Where No Man Has Gone Before"

Presented below are some images of a rare blue medical jumpsuit worn by Gary Lockwood as helmsman Lt. Cmdr Gary Mitchell in the second Star Trek pilot "Where No Man Has Gone Before"; which was produced in July of 1965 and broadcast as the third episode of season one on September 22, 1966. This historic production was the first to feature William Shatner in the role of Captain James Kirk.

The jumpsuit features a unique caduceus-like logo which was rubber stamped in dark ink on the left chest fabric; and was actually worn by two highly memorable TOS leading guest actors. In the episode screenshots that follow the modern day images, it can be seen that Ricardo Montalban also donned this jumpsuit in the 1st season episode "Space Seed" (first airdate: Feb. 16, 1967) during his portrayal of the genetically-engineered superman Khan Noonien Singh. Interestingly, the ship designation "U.S.S. Enterprise" which is clearly visible at the base of the logo in the second pilot and in the early portions of "Space Seed" has been intentionally removed for the final appearances of the jumpsuit in that episode, and thus has taken on its modern day look.

Star Trek: The Original Series Blue Science Officer Tunic from "The Cage"

Presented below are many high resolution photos of a rare screen worn science officer tunic from the first Star Trek pilot "The Cage"; which was filmed in late 1964 and featured Jeffery Hunter in the role of Captain Christopher Pike. This tunic sold earlier this month as Lot 1077 in the Profiles In History Icons of Hollywood auction at The Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills, California.

The tunic was originally constructed of heavy blue velour fabric, which has turned a light lavender in color over time due to repeated studio dry cleaning. It has also been retrofitted with a black TOS 1st season collar for use in early episodes of the series. The original Cage collars were color matched to the base tunic color - either blue or gold. Below is a closeup view of the exterior of the collar ...

and an interior view of the collar construction. There are several sewn-in white fabric costume label strips; however, there is no handwriting or any markings on these labels...

This costume exhibits several key design characteristics that all irrevocably associate it with "The Cage" production effort. To begin, each arm features an approx. 1.5" slit designed into the rear cuff; a detail that is unique to Cage tunics. Additionally, this tunic features a permanent bold imprint on each cuff that was formed from the prior attachment of a single band of straight gold braid on the fabric. In some areas within the imprint, traces of the original blue color of the fabric is still evident; having been protected by the braid. When "The Corbomite Maneuver" was produced as the first filmed episode for Star Trek's first season, all Starfleet tunics featured the familiar scalloped braid with curved borders; so the fact that this tunic once possessed straight braid is a second unique Cage related design characteristic. In the following screen capture from "The Cage", Leonard Nimoy can be seen wearing a blue tunic that exhibits both the slitted cuff and straight braid designs ...

The following image presents both the straight braid from "The Cage" as well as the scalloped braid from "The Corbomite Maneuver" ...

Just as the braid imprints were captured in the velour of this tunic; an imprint formed by the prior attachment of a Starfleet insignia patch on the left chest is also evident. It is not as pronounced as the braid imprints; yet still quite distinct, and the velour also features some embedded black threads where the lower right corner of the patch was attached to the fabric. Below, a 3rd Season TOS Sciences patch has been photographed beside the imprint ...

In earlier photostudies on this site, both 1st/2nd season and 3rd season patches have been photographed together for size comparison purposes; and with the taking of the above image, it is now possible to view all patch dimensions from the pilot episode onwards ...

One can see that the Cage patch size is clearly the smallest of all; measuring approx. 2.25" tall versus the approx. 2.75" high 1st/2nd season patch and the approx. 3.25" tall 3rd season patch. The width of all patches remained constant at approx. 2". The former presence of the tiny 2" x 2.25" Cage style insignia on this tunic is another uniquely identifying characteristic of costumes designed for the first Star Trek pilot. Additionally, it is noted that this costume does not possess the long UNIQUE brand hidden zipper running down the front left side of the torso - a design feature that was incorporated into all of the Starfleet male tunics that were created after the pilots for use in the three regular seasons of TOS production.

In "The Cage", it is noteworthy that only three actors were seen wearing a blue sciences tunic that featured the single band of gold braid affixed to each cuff; as was present on this costume. Those actors were Leonard Nimoy as Mr. Spock; John Hoyt as the ship's Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Phillip Boyce; and Edward Madden as the unnamed Enterprise Geologist who appeared in multiple scenes on the Bridge, in the Briefing and Transporter Rooms, and on the planet Talos IV's surface. Below is an image of Nimoy and Madden on the Bridge in the opening scenes of "The Cage" conversing with Jeffrey Hunter and wearing this style of tunic ...

Below is John Hoyt on the Bridge, the 3rd actor in the pilot to be seen in this style of tunic ...

The following screen capture shows all three actors together in a Briefing Room scene that followed Captain Pike's abduction by the Talosians ...

With no other actors appearing in the production wearing this style of Starfleet uniform; it seems reasonable to conclude that this tunic was screen worn by either Nimoy or Hoyt or Madden. However, there is some further data which suggests that this tunic was in fact worn by Leonard Nimoy as Mr. Spock. Interestingly, this same costume was sold as Lot 9 in the 2002 Profiles In History Bob Justman Star Trek auction. After the 2011 sale, it was shipped with auction tags from both the Justman and the Icons of Hollywood events ...

In the 2002 auction catalog description, this tunic is described as a science officer Cage tunic "with zipper closures along left shoulder" ...

The tunic does not currently have a small zipper running along its left shoulder, just an open seam, and the 2011 catalog description did not mention a zipper. However, in examining the internal shoulder construction of this tunic; there does appear to be a difference in the design of the right versus left sides. Below is an image of the internal right shoulder seam, as viewed through the top collar ...

and a view with portions of both the right and left side shoulder construction details visible side by side...

It does appear that the left side features significantly wider support strips of fabric emanating from the seam line which would be required to interface with a zipper tape (the main cloth body of a zipper to which the teeth are attached). Also, the black collar was attached to the tunic with its seam line properly aligned with the left shoulder seam line, which would enable a pre-existing zipper to continue to be used. When a different Cage tunic used by Nimoy was sold as Lot 591 in Profiles Hollywood Auction 27 on April 5, 2007; it also had been retrofitted with a black 1st season collar in exactly the same manner to support the use of its still attached left shoulder zipper.

The earlier presence of a left shoulder zipper on this tunic should be considered extremely significant as only the Nimoy blue braided tunics from all the male Sciences tunics seen in the pilot featured this design element; the tunics worn by Hoyt and Madden did not have shoulder zippers. In the following screenshot, with Nimoy and Hoyt sitting side by side in the Briefing Room, the difference in the left shoulder construction is very evident ...

In the following view of Madden on the planet's surface, it is evident that his tunic has a continuous blue fabric collar running along the left side to the rear of the neck without a break for a zipper ...

It does not seem likely that in 2002 Profiles would specifically mention the presence of zipper closures on the left shoulder of this tunic unless they were present on the costume at that time. And the differing left shoulder construction visible today does support that earlier Justman catalog description of a previously attached zipper. Thus, this is very indicative that the tunic was used by Nimoy.

The tunic is presently displayed on a tall headless mannequin along with a set of Original Series starfleet uniform pants. A third season insignia patch is resting on the left chest of the tunic. Some photos follow ...

The overall height of the mannequin is based on an approx. 6'2" male; which compares favorably to the height of Nimoy, who stands just under 6'1". The tunic does appear to fit an individual of that size quite well. A side-by-side comparison with a photo of Nimoy in costume reveals a striking similarity in the overall dimensional appearance of the tunics ...

Based on the perception of significant height differences between the three actors, as discerned from the following Cage screenshot views (which, admittedly, is not an impeccable means of comparison); it does seem that a tunic which would fit Nimoy well would be too long for Hoyt and too short for Madden...

It is quite evident in the Briefing Room portion of the above photo that Madden's tunic possesses a very thin hem line at the bottom - with just a small strip of fabric folded over and sewn into place; almost equal in width to the band of braid on the cuffs. While, in contrast, Nimoy's tunic exhibits a considerably wider band of folded fabric in the bottom hem - a feature also evident on the Lot 1077 tunic.

With some very compelling evidence favoring the conclusion that this costume was once worn by Leonard Nimoy as Spock; this Cage tunic is without question a rare costume from the first pilot of TOS that was screen worn by one of three significant Starfleet officers in the episode.

A number of Original Series items achieved very impressive results; including a mid-grade hand phaser prop which realized $79,950, a rare walking tribble which sold for $17,220, a Gene Roddenberry typed letter from 1966 mentioning the invention of the phaser and tricorder which witnessed a final price of $20,910, and a rare Science Officer tunic from the 1st TOS pilot episode "The Cage" which realized $9,225. From the feature film era and subsequent television series; a Star Trek VI James Doohan maroon Starfleet officer's uniform sold for $9,849 and a Patrick Stewart 3rd season command tunic from Star Trek: TNG realized $6,765. Star Trek: TNG Command Red Starfleet Uniform

This one-piece female jumpsuit was featured in various episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation and has black shoulders with the Command Red chest, back, sleeves and piping around the Mandarin collar; as well as a black waist and legs that end in stirrups. It has a sewn-in Voyager costume label with the handwritten name Jenny Navarro and has been photographed with a screen used TNG combadge attached to a Velcro patch on its left breast. The true color of the TNG command fabric is magenta when viewed in normal lighting; though this material had a tendency to appear red under the high intensity lights on the Paramount studio soundstage; in much the same way as the TOS olive green command fabric would appear gold on screen. Some high resolution photos that reveal the construction details of this costume are presented below. While many illustrate the magenta color well, a few exhibit the red effect ...

Star Trek: The Original Series Melkotian Head casting

Presented below are some photos of a rare casting created from the original Paramount studio molds of the alien Melkotian head seen in the memorable 3rd season TOS episode "Spectre of the Gun"; in which Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, Dr. McCoy, Scotty and Chekov are forced to re-enact the historic gunfight at the O.K. Corral (first airdate: October 25, 1968). This very flexible, plastic half-head has a hollow back which has been generously filled with foam to provide support and render the mask displayable. To the authors knowledge, the original screen-used Melkotian head has never been offered at auction, and might not have survived the long span of time - approximately 43 years - since it was filmed on the TOS soundstage.

Star Trek: Voyager Alien Impulse Engine Component

Presented below are some detailed photos of a screen used metal and acrylic handheld prop featured in the 7th season Star Trek: Voyager episode "Renaissance Man" (first airdate: May 16, 2001). This item was described as a part of an alien impulse engine and has a cylindrical design with asymmetrical handles on both sides, as well as working internal lights. Separate buttons on its aluminum cap activate a continuous purple light within its central acrylic surrounded core tube, and also control a working strobe LED near the top of the cap which flashes the colors red and green in sequence. This prop measures approx. 15.5" x 6" x 3.5". Some photos that highlight its appearance in "Renaissance Man" are shown after the modern day images ...

This prop is also adorned with a faded but recognizable Star Trek: Enterprise style graphical application; which suggests it quite likely was used in an episode of that series after appearing on Voyager...

Below are some detailed photos of a 6" x 14" control panel that was used as part of Mr. Spock's library computer workstation aboard the refit Enterprise NCC-1701 starship in Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979); the first appearance of the Enterprise and her crew since the completion of TOS production in 1969. As seen in the screenshots from the feature film that follow the modern day photos; this panel was backlit so that its 90 transparent dome shaped control buttons would appear a light green in color surrounding the single red control button. This panel was also screen used in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982) as the design of Spock's workstation remained virtually unchanged for that production.

Star Trek TOS Finnegan Silver Tunic from "Shore Leave"

Presented below are some detailed photos of a rare Starfleet Silver tunic worn by actor Bruce Mars in his role as Finnegan in the highly memorable and entertaining 1st Season TOS episode "Shore Leave" (first airdate: Dec. 29, 1966). This beautiful tunic features studio applied distress in the form of a tear by the rear right shoulder seam which can be screen matched to the fight scene between Kirk and Finnegan in "Shore Leave". Tunics of this style; traditionally referred to as cadet tunics, also made appearances on-screen in the 2nd season Star Trek: The Original Series episodes "Wolf In The Fold" and "The Trouble With Tribbles". Some screenshots from "Shore Leave" that document Bruce Mars wearing this particular tunic, as well as photos of other silver tunics in TOS are presented after the modern day images.

Star Trek TOS Elasian Royal Guard Tunic & Armor from "Elaan of Troyius"

Presented below are some detailed photos of a rare Elasian Royal Guard Tunic worn by actor Chuck Beck in the memorable 3rd Season TOS episode "Elaan of Troyius" (first airdate: Dec. 20, 1968). This tunic is missing its chest and shoulder armor, but still retains two large armor pieces affixed to its back. Constructed from a shiny gold colored fabric and accented by the orange plates; this costume is one of TOS Costume Designer Bill Theiss's highly attractive creations for the series.

Always budget conscious, the Desilu wardrobe department obtained the orange material for the armor by utilizing off-the-shelf kitchen table plastic placemats.

Interestingly, little folded fabric swatches were used on the interior of the costume to help affix the plastic armor pieces to the tunic. As clearly seen in the following images, these small fabric inserts were created from 3rd season olive-green TOS command fabric. The characteristic double knit diamond weave pattern is very evident on these pieces...

Another interesting design characteristic of this costume is that it is equipped with the UNIQUE brand metal zipper that is traditionally found on screen used TOS Starfleet uniforms but is quite uncommon for alien wardrobe pieces...

Lt. Ilia Starfleet Class A Uniform from Star Trek: The Motion Picture

Presented below are some detailed photos of a rare, screen-used Starfleet Class A Uniform worn by the lovely actress Persis Khambatta in her highly memorable role as the bald Deltan navigator Lieutenant Ilia from Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979). TMP officers uniforms are rarely found to still possess their original braid, patch and biomonitor device; which adds to the desirability of this costume that was worn by one of the most beautiful women to appear in a Star Trek production. Following the modern day images, which highlight many of the construction details of this uniform, are some photos of Persis Khambatta as seen in the film.

On Friday July 22nd at the 2011 San Diego Comic Con, William Shatner will be previewing his new documentary "The Captains", in which he travels the world to interview fellow actors Chris Pine, Patrick Stewart, Avery Brooks, Kate Mulgrew and Scott Bakula - all of whom portrayed lead roles as Starfleet Captains in a Star Trek television series/feature film.

Additionally, Shatner will be hosting a free outdoor screening in Los Angeles on July 25th and in New York on July 30th. The LA event will take place at the Hollywood Forever Memorial Park - Fairbanks Lawn, 6000 Santa Monica Blvd (gates open at 7:00 pm), while the NY event will occur at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum - One Intrepid Square, 12th Ave and 46th Street (doors open at 7:30 pm).

Kirk Vs Kirk: Star Trek's William Shatner arm wrestles young pretender Chris Pine on new documentary

He famously played Star Trek's Captain Kirk for more than 30 years.

But now William Shatner is clearly passing the baton on to young pretender Chris Pine who played the young Enterprise captain in the 2009 J.J. Abrams film reboot of the franchise.

The 80-year-old veteran actor is seen locking the 30-year-old actor into an arm wrestle on a new documentary.

However, it appears Pine was a little star struck when he met Shatner face to face for the interview.

'He's shy,' the older actor told Canoe.ca. 'So the way I started the interview, I put out a table and chairs outside the Paramount gates, and arm-wrestled with him.

'That was the beginning of my interview with him. I think it broke the ice, that's for sure.'

Shatner famously did not appear in the 2009 film reboot, unlike his co-star Leonard Nimoy who reprised his role as an older Spock.

At the time, Shatner confessed at being upset about the snub saying; 'I can't believe it, I'm not in the movie at all. Leonard, God bless his heart, is in, but not me.

'I thought, "what a decision to make", since it obviously is a decision not to make use of the popularity I have to ensure the movie has good box office figures,' he added. 'It didn't seem to be a wise business decision.'

The documentary, which Shatner directed, also sees him interview Patrick Stewart, Kate Mulgrew, Avery Brooks and Scott Bakula.

British actor Stewart famously played Captain Luc Picard on Star Trek: The Next Generation from 1987-1994, while Scott Baluka starred as Captain Jonathan Archer on Star Trek: Enterprise for four years until 2005.

In addition, the actor spoke to Kate Mulgrew, who played Captain Kathryn Janeway in Star Trek: Voyager from 1995- 2001 and Avery Brooks, who starred as Captain Sisko from 1993-1999 in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

'It's a detailed look at the actors who played the captains on the various iterations of Star Trek,' says Shatner, whose latest TV project $h*! My Dad Says was recently cancelled.

'I have focused on themes like love and hate, divorce and work, intertwining their lives, and I think you will enjoy it.

'I had a great time doing it.'

Presented below are some detailed photos of the topmost command module section from a Phoenix warp drive starship filming model created for the production of Star Trek: First Contact (1996). This model was consigned to the recent Propworx June 2011 Star Trek auction from the collection of Star Trek visual effects artist Doug Drexler, and was painted a flat grey color at its time of sale. It has since been repainted to reflect the correct on-screen appearance of the Phoenix. Some screenshots of this first faster-than-light starship from the feature film are displayed after the modern day images.

The highly anticipated Propworx Star Trek Auction concluded earlier today; offering collectors a total of 257 lots of exceptional props, costumes and artwork from the various television series and feature films in the franchise. This was the second sale held by Propworx dedicated entirely to Star Trek - after its highly successful auction last year at the 2010 Las Vegas Star Trek Convention - and, it is hoped, the tradition will continue for many years to come! Some highlights of this exciting day of bidding included the TOS Matte Painting from "The Menagerie, Pt. 1" realizing a final bid of $12,000; the TOS Red Starfleet dress from "The Apple" selling at $8,000; a working Star Trek: First Contact Phaser Rifle reaching $4,000; the 67" x 13" Star Trek: DS9 hero Defiant Helm Control panel witnessing a high bid of $3,500; and a hero Star Trek: Nemesis Mark-X Medical Tricorder selling for a hammer price of $2,750. Star Trek: Phase II Command Dress

Presented below are some detailed photos of a very rare TOS-style Command Dress that was constructed for the ill-fated Star Trek: Phase II television series project (Paramount, 1977); an endeavor initially intended as a follow up to Star Trek: The Original Series that ultimately transitioned into the highly anticipated Star Trek: The Motion Picture feature film of 1979. This beautiful piece of Star Trek history sold at auction earlier today on ebay for an impressive final bid of $6668. The following pictures show the major construction details of this costume, which is in pristine overall condition and features a TOS 3rd season patch and braid. It is clearly identifiable as Phase II due to the use of an olive green double knit square weave fabric for its main body (as opposed to the diamond weave fabric used in TOS 3rd season costumes) and the presence of a Conceal brand zipper with plastic teeth (as opposed to the UNIQUE brand zipper with metal teeth used on all seasons of TOS Starfleet regular duty uniforms). Video Tour of Star Trek: Enterprise Shuttlepod 1 at Profiles May 15, 2011 Hollywood Auction 44

Presented below is an outstanding video tour of the Star Trek: Enterprise Shuttlepod 1 craft, a full scale and fully detailed exterior/interior shuttle mockup that was used in the production of the Paramount television series; and is now being offered as Lot 1549 in the upcoming Profiles In History Hollywood Auction 44 on this Sunday, May 15th, 2011. Shuttlepod 1 measures 20 ft. in length and has a pre-auction bid estimate of $40,000 - $60,000; making it the likely highest priced and most significant item of Star Trek memorabilia in the sale. It is one of only two full scale shuttles made for the series, and features newly replicated interior control panels (made by the same Paramount shop that constructed the original panels) to replace the screen used control panels which were stripped from the vessel when the series concluded filming.

The spring 2011 Profiles In History entertainment memorabilia auction "Hollywood Auction 44" will take place on May 14th and 15th at the Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills, California; and there will be a total of 102 Star Trek lots included in the sale that represent a very impressive selection of props, costumes and artwork from the various television series and motion pictures in the franchise. The Original Series highlights include a collection of Desilu soundstage blueprints used in the production of various episodes, a pair of Matt Jefferies original technical drawings for the TOS Type-1 and Type-2 phasers, and a collection of miscellaneous resin buttons from the Bridge of the U.S.S. Enterprise. As well, a TOS-style Captain's Chair and Railing that were used as a stand-in during the visual effects shots for the production of the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode "Trials and Tribble-ations" will be offered for sale. The auction will also feature several authentic Star Trek screen used costumes displayed on life-size custom-made mannequins (many featuring make-up appliances painted and dressed by Paramount) that were part of the exhibition "Star Trek: The Tradition Continues" at The Paley Center for Media.
