Star Trek: The Original Series Red Engineering Dress

Presented below are some reference photos of a screen worn TOS red female duty uniform - one of the iconic creations of Star Trek Original Series Costume Designer William Ware Theiss. This beautiful engineering dress was constructed of a velour fabric for the 1st or 2nd season of the series and features a front hidden zipper traversing the left side of the costume along the major seam line that bisects the gold starfleet insignia patch. The TOS female duty uniforms were the most elaborately constructed of all of the Starfleet costumes developed for the show.

The following images are displayed with the gracious permission of a long time, major American collector and expert on Star Trek Original Series props and costumes; who wishes to remain anonymous ...

The large black collar affixed to the top of the costume exhibits identical construction details to those seen in a 2nd season Sciences dress which was featured in an earlier photostudy on this site. Specifically, the right half of the collar is firmly sewn in place and the left half is loosely attached with several push clasps, as evident in the following images of both dresses ...

In the screen capture below of Grace Lee Whitney from the 1st season episode "Miri", the actress is pulling on the front collar of her dress and reveals the loosely held left side collar construction to the camera ...

Some additional views of this historic costume are shown below ...

This style of uniform was worn by some of the most beautiful women to appear in The Original Series ...
