Presented below are several different production drawings and concept sketches created by celebrated artist Andrew Probert in 1978 during development work for Star Trek: The Motion Picture (Paramount, 1979). Mr. Probert is best known as the designer of the U.S.S. Enterprise for Star Trek: TMP as well as the U.S.S. Enterprise D for Star Trek: The Next Generation.
The following set of sketches depict the San Francisco Air Tram that is seen at the beginning of the film. Some screenshots from the scene that features the Air Tram are shown immediately after the concept artwork. This scene contained the first images of 23rd century Earth that were ever seen in the history of Star Trek - as all of the TOS episodes took place either aboard ship or on the surface of alien worlds.
