Below are some photos of a pair of rare screen used Star Trek: The Original Series U.S.S. Enterprise Bridge Chairs to be auctioned as Lots 621 and 622 in Profiles In History's upcoming "Drama, Action, Romance: The Hollywood Auction" on December 16, 2012. These rare and iconic set fixtures that appeared in every episode of TOS were created by the Desilu prop department using mass produced Burke model 115 fiberglass shell patio chairs - manufactured by the now defunct Burke, Inc. furniture company of Dallas, Texas - and modifying the design with a black vinyl padded Starfleet back rest extension. The pre-auction bid estimates for these outstanding pieces of Star Trek history are $15,000 - $20,000 per lot.
Those interested in participating in the December 16th entertainment memorabilia sale may register to bid live online on the Artfact website at: http://www.artfact.com/auction-catalog/drama,-action,-romance:-the-hollywood-auction-4va76bfenv. A preview of the complete set of Star Trek related material to be offered in this impressive auction will be presented in a forthcoming post.
The following images were taken of an original '60s Burke model 115 chair in the authors collection that was not screened used; which show the construction details of the underside of these chairs as well as the manufacturers marks on the bottom of the four-footed aluminum swivel base.
Below is Matt Jefferies' original concept sketch for the design of the Enterprise Bridge chairs, including the notation that identifies them as "modified Burke"...
