In less than a week - on May 7th, 2009 - the highly anticipated Star Trek major motion picture directed by J. J. Abrams and starring Chris Pine as James Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock will blast into theatres across North America. At the official site for the film http://www.startrekmovie.com an impressive display of positive reviews from the major media flash across the top of the web page. These include:
"Pure Filmmaking Exhilaration!" - RollingStone
"WAY COOL" - Newsweek
"The First 'Star Trek' For Everyone!" - Access Hollywood
"The First A+ Movie of the Summer" - Film.com
"Smart and breathless. A summer blockbuster." - VARIETY
"Spectacular action. ILM again raises the bar on special effects." - Hollywood Reporter
Indeed, there seems to be a universal consensus among those who have reported on the film online after viewing selected scenes, or the whole feature itself in a special screening; that this picture has sustained, start-to-finish action with a well designed plot and should be a box office success - likely ranking with the best Trek films produced to date. It is certainly time for this franchise to realize a major success with the viewing public; one that will hopefully rejuvenate interest and perhaps pull in a whole new generation of fans.
Presented below are a series of photos that reveal many aspects of the new Enterprise Bridge design. It is aesthetically pleasing and very high-tech in appearance; yet the panels are dramatically different from the familiar LCARS designs implemented in TNG through Voyager, and bear no resemblance to the '60s TOS Bridge panels created by Matt Jefferies. However, the large helm and navigations console positioned directly ahead of a streamlined TOS inspired Captain's Chair (with 360 degrees of rotation on a large round support pillar, and a set of black cushions quite similar to the Desilu version) is clearly reminiscent of The Original Series and a nice salute to the TOS command module design that launched the Star Trek phenomenon.
